Our community service.. NMSU Students showing their potential

Some of our community service collaborations and experiences!

Escuela ( Elementary school) Mariano Cortes

There was another great day in the schools in Turrialba. The national curriculum has an Art Festival day in which all the students have an opportunity to share their artistic talents (Dance, Song, Drawing etc.). Some of our NMSU students were able to be judges in the festival at the elementary school.

Luis, Ruben and Patrick were seated in with the students to watch the transfer of student leadership at La Suiza Colegio. The gym was packed and there was not much of a breeze blowing through the room. Regardless, the ceremony is really cool because the students repeat the the process of transferring power
from one student body group to another. Also, students from other schools (elementary to high school) come to view the transfer of power and eat lunch with the new student leaders.

While the some students were sweating it out in
the gym, Gabriela was sweating it out in the macadamia nut factory. She worked side by side with the employees and learned a ton about how industrial engineering impacts the workers' at a
personal level.

Another great day of working for Poncho( Alfonso Garza) and Jody Easley was helping during a presentation of Tourism in Turrialba. Both of these students were able to help clean up and sort the trash produced from this event. They learned about recycling in Costa Rica and how it is connected to the status of hotels and tourism activities.

  1. This was a great adventure in getting to know other people, other countries and other cultures. The experiences these students lived, as well as myself, will stay with us our entire lives. Getting to deeply know our adoptive families from Costa Rica, living in their homes, sharing their food, their thoughts and basically everything they have as if we have known each other for many years, is priceless. This learning activity goes deeper than just learning about other cultures, deeper than been immersed in a foreign language program, this is about bonding, about working shoulder to shoulder with the local community and establishing bonds that will last a lifetime.

  2. I really want to thank Dr. Navarro not just for this opportunity, for her patience, vision and for her leadership. My experience in Costa Rica was as an Intern at Casa Turire in the administrative area. I have learnt how a Hotel runs from the front desk to the marketing area. Leaving in Costa Rica as an intern helped me to develop an independent behavior. This was an experience for life that i will never forget. The most important fact is the time that I spent learning the culture, costumes and life at this wonderful country.

  3. Lets Go Costa Rica!
An experience that will always be dear to my heart. While in Costa Rica, I had the opportunity to learn first hand about the mission and philosophy Costa Rica has for its education system. I learned from 1st and 2nd graders and teachers that have been implementing the practices that I was learning at my university. I had the pleasure of living with a Costarican family. My host sister introduced me to her friends, took me hiking, taught me to make "warm sugar water." The family loved me and accepted me as one of their own.

  4. Lets Go Costa Rica! gifted me with one of the most beautiful, enlightening, and mesmerizing experiences of my collegial career. Travel abroad had never been a luxury in my family's timeline, and thanks to Dr. Navarro and her initiative to provide a travel abroad experience to the students of NMSU, I was able to embark on a wonderful journey. While in Costa Rica, I experienced the ocean for the first time, created everlasting bonds with both my host family and my travel buddies, and abandoned the mindset that I would never indulge in the wonders of the world. This program opened the gates to further travel abroad, and I will forever be grateful to Dr. Navarro for gifting me with the courage to explore and discover the beauty and delights that our world has to offer.
