Travel abroad had never been a luxury in my family's timeline, and thanks to Dr. Navarro and her initiative to provide a travel abroad experience to the students of NMSU, I was able to embark on a wonderful journey. While in Costa Rica, I experienced the ocean for the first time, created everlasting bonds with both my host family and my travel buddies, and abandoned the mindset that I would never indulge in the wonders of the world. This program opened the gates to further travel abroad, and I will forever be grateful to Dr. Navarro for gifting me with the courage to explore and discover the beauty and delights that our world has to offer. While in Costa Rica, I had the opportunity to learn first hand about the mission and philosophy Costa Rica has for its education system. I learned from 1st and 2nd graders and teachers that have been implementing the practices that I was learning at my university. I had the pleasure of living with a Costarican family. My host sister introduced me to her friends, took me hiking, taught me to make "warm sugar water." The family loved me and accepted me as one of their own.
Multicultural Education in PracticeAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01093571750223502681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1017351302852467587.post-6656010510216314902015-04-21T11:23:29.783-07:002015-04-21T11:23:29.783-07:00I really want to thank Dr. Navarro not just for th...I really want to thank Dr. Navarro not just for this opportunity, for her patience, vision and for her leadership. My experience in Costa Rica was as an Intern at Casa Turire in the administrative area. I have learnt how a Hotel runs from the front desk to the marketing area. Leaving in Costa Rica as an intern helped me to develop an independent behavior. This was an experience for life that i will never forget. The most important fact is the time that I spent learning the culture, costumes and life at this wonderful country.
Poncho Garza. The experiences these students lived, as well as myself, will stay with us our entire lives. Getting to deeply know our adoptive families from Costa Rica, living in their homes, sharing their food, their thoughts and basically everything they have as if we have known each other for many years, is priceless. This learning activity goes deeper than just learning about other cultures, deeper than been immersed in a foreign language program, this is about bonding, about working shoulder to shoulder with the local community and establishing bonds that will last a lifetime.
Armando Altamirano
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18331348560658531262noreply@blogger.com
