TURRIALBA

Finally we made it to our service destination. Although most of us are working in schools and teaching (we could say learning) there are a few in the group who get to participate in service projects in a variety of locations. Gabriela is in a factory of macadamia nut processing. She will get to work with the employees and learn how their jobs provide financial support for their families.

Here, Gabriela is getting the first introduction to the processing plant. Seventy-five percent of the product goes to the US for use in products by US companies. The Director said about 12-15 tons of macadamias are shipped from this one facility to US companies each year. Twenty-two employees clean, sort, and pack all those nuts!

This picture to the right is only about half of the processing plant. And, don't let the photo fool you but it is really noisy. It will be interesting to see if there is ear protection for the employees.

This is the Administration office for El Colegio Técnico Profesional de La Suiza. We will get photos to add to this once we see the NMSU students in the classroom. They were already busy and interrupting them at 8:30 in the morning on the first day (June 3rd) didn't seem appropriate. This high school is on a very large area of land with various buildings for different classrooms.
